1 Peter: Exiles and Sojourners

Peter was not only one of the 12 disciples personally called by Jesus, he was also a part of the inner circle of 3 (along with James and John). Peter enjoyed an intimacy and a fellowship with Jesus that not many others did. Jesus’ example to Peter of how to love and shepherd the flock shine through this letter to the persecuted church in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey).

As we dive into 1 Peter we see themes of hope in our future inheritance, a reiteration of God’s call to be a holy (set apart) people in spite of any circumstance. Peter also deals with a proper perspective on authority and suffering, as well as how the church are stewards of God’s grace. However one of the most important questions that Peter answers in this letter is: How do we live in a world that is not really our home?
